Regenerative Medicine Q&A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine covers several treatments, from bone marrow transplants and organ replacements to the treatments used in pain medicine. The Pain Care Boise team offers three kinds of regenerative medicine — stem cell therapy, PRP injections, and prolotherapy.

If you’re on Medicare, you can also get regenerative injections containing amniotic fluid. This fluid comes from placentas that are freely donated by mothers after cesarean-section births.

The fluid contains growth factors and anti-inflammatory chemicals that heal arthritis, tendon and meniscus tears, degenerative disc disease, and many of the same musculoskeletal conditions treated by the other regenerative therapies.

What type of regenerative medicine options are available?

The team at Pain Care Boise offer several regenerative medicine treatments to help find the most suitable method to offer the most effective results. They offer the following regenerative medicine options:

What type of regenerative medicine is prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is an injection of glucose (sugar), which triggers healing by irritating the tissues. Like stem cell and PRP treatments, your provider uses ultrasound imaging when injecting the sugar solution. The real-time imaging ensures that your provider places your regenerative treatment precisely at the site of the damaged tissues.

Prolotherapy is frequently used to treat torn ligaments. It’s effective in treating many problems. These include sacroiliac joint strains, ankle sprains, shin splints, whiplash injuries, and costochondritis, a condition in which the cartilage connecting a rib to your breastbone becomes inflamed.

Amniotic Fluid

Regenerative techniques are not typically covered by sureties. However, just recently Medicare(only) now covers the use of Amniotic fluid.
This contains many growth factors and cytokines which help with regeneration and decrease inflammation. There are no stem cells in this product. It is derived from the amniotic liquid within the placenta.

It is only taken from consenting, pre-planned, screened, Caesarean births. This process follows strict FDA regulations. Like PRP it can be used for arthritis, tennis/golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, and another tendon/ligament injuries of the knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. This is EXCITING news for the elderly or any patient on Medicare!
